Rick started work at FLORIDA TODAY in September 2004, arriving the afternoon that Hurricane Frances struck the Space Coast. He lived inside the newspaper building on U.S. 1 during the following week, reporting on hurricane destruction during the day and sleeping on the carpet at night.
Today, Rick covers a wide variety of assignments across Brevard County south of the Pineda Causeway, including city governments in Melbourne and Palm Bay, breaking news events, feature stories and beachside communities. He also worked as a USA Today correspondent from 2008-15 and still writes occasional stories for the national newspaper.
When not working, Rick loves playing racquetball at Pro-Health & Fitness Centers in Viera and Melbourne, running 5K races, coffee shops, domestic travel and reading used books from thrift stores.
He previously reported in Ohio for Gannett's Port Clinton News Herald and Fremont News-Messenger; worked as managing editor/sports editor of a family-owned weekly newspaper in Barberton, Ohio; and attended journalism school at Kent State University.
