Originally hailing from Monroe, NY, I moved to FL after graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts from SUNY Albany in 2013. After working several years in human resources/sales, I joined the Housing Authority of Brevard County in 2016. My role within this organization is to assist families participating in the Housing Choice Voucher Program, which is more commonly known as, "Section 8." This program enables low income families to rent units in the private market with the help of a subsidized housing assistance payment. As an Occupancy Specialist, I collect and review data provided by these participant families in relation to: their assets, income, and family composition. After obtaining and organizing this information, I then calculate the applicable monthly rental assistance subsidy they qualify for in accordance with regulations outlined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The program helps disadvantaged populations like the elderly and disabled gain access to housing that is safe, decent, and sanitary. In addition to assisting these populations, I am also a Nan McKay certified Family Self-Sufficiency Specialist. HABC's Family-Self Sufficiency Program is a voluntary path for motivated participants to hone their earnings potential and decrease their need for rental assistance. Through the FSS Program, participants work with a coordinator to accomplish goals that will lead to increases in earned income; for example, furthering their education. As evidenced by my work, I believe in advancing opportunities for individuals is critical to not only enriching a community, but also sustaining its vitality. 321M exemplifies the impact focused professionals can have as a keystone for community development and I am truly excited to be a part of this group.
